A Formal Semantics of Influence in Bayesian Reasoning

چکیده
This paper proposes a formal definition of influence in Bayesian reasoning, based on the notions of state (as probability distribution), predicate, validity and conditioning. Our approach highlights how conditioning a joint entwined/entangled state with a predicate on one of its components has ‘crossover’ influence on the other components. We use the total variation metric on probability distributions to quantitatively measure such influence. These insights are applied to give a rigorous explanation of the fundamental concept of d-separation in Bayesian networks. 1998 ACM Subject Classification Probabilistic computation, F. 1.2 Digital Object Identifier 10.4230/LIPIcs.MFCS.2017.21

The Effect of Bayesian Reasoning Training on the Results of Clinical Reasoning Tests of Interns
Introduction: Clinical reasoning includes a range of thinking about clinical medicine at all stages of patient evaluation. Bayesian theory can be used to refute or confirm differential diagnoses in the clinical reasoning process. In this way, by learning the basic mathematical language of probability in medicine, we can change our beliefs according to new evidence. The aim of this study is to i...
متن کاملProbabilistic Models for Agent's Beliefs and Decisions
Many applications of intelligent systems require reasoning about the mental states of agents in the domain. We may want to reason about an agent’s beliefs, including beliefs about other agents; we may also want to reason about an agent’s preferences, and how his beliefs and preferences relate to his behavior. We define a probabilistic epistemic logic (PEL) in which belief statements are given a...
متن کاملTranslation-Based Compositional Reasoning for Software Systems
Software systems are often model checked by translating them into a directly model-checkable formalism. Any serious software system requires application of compositional reasoning to overcome the computational complexity of model checking. This paper presents Translation-Based Compositional Reasoning (TBCR), an approach to application of compositional reasoning in the context of model checking ...
متن کاملLoad-Frequency Control: a GA based Bayesian Networks Multi-agent System
Bayesian Networks (BN) provides a robust probabilistic method of reasoning under uncertainty. They have been successfully applied in a variety of real-world tasks but they have received little attention in the area of load-frequency control (LFC). In practice, LFC systems use proportional-integral controllers. However since these controllers are designed using a linear model, the nonlinearities...
متن کاملKnowledge and Data Fusion in Probabilistic Networks
Probability theory provides the theoretical basis for a logically coherent process of combining prior knowledge with empirical data to draw plausible inferences and to refine theories as observations accrue. Increases in the expressive power of languages for expressing probabilistic theories have been accompanied by refinements and adaptations of Bayesian learning methods to handle the more exp...
